Hotel Staff Hears the Word of God
Andrea never dreamed she would ever travel to Africa, neither did she expect to teach oral style Bible study skills to anyone. She was the tech person, not a trainer. However, Dorothy Miller, the Executive Director of Simply The Story, needed someone to train a small group of Kenyans in the skills of Simply The Story. Dorothy sent Andrea.
While listening to recordings of Dorothy teaching STS, the man cleaning her hotel room asked Andrea, "Is that you?" "No, that's my boss," she replied. Would you like to know what she's teaching?" The man said, "Yes." Andrea asked him to meet her on the grassy patch outside the hotel later that afternoon. She also encouraged him to bring as many people as he wanted - they all could hear more. To Andrea's surprise, seven hotel staff showed up.
Andrea needed a way for one of her students, John, to practice his new Bible storytelling and discussion leading skills with "normal" people, so she invited John to present the story of Blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46-52). John had learned that story earlier that same day. The group had a great discussion. After they finished talking, Andrea asked everyone how long they thought they had been discussing the Bible story. They all thought it had been about 20-25 minutes. Imagine their surprise when they realized that 45 minutes had passed!
